Seasonally Variable Aquifer Discharge and Cooler Climate in Bermuda During the Last Interglacial Revealed by Subannual Clumped Isotope Analysis

چکیده

Faunal analog reconstructions suggest that Last Interglacial (MIS 5e) sea surface temperatures were cooler around Bermuda and in the Caribbean than modern climate. Here we describe new revised clumped isotope measurements of Cittarium pica fossil shells supporting previous findings during Interglacial. We resolve temperature δ18Ow differences between two closely located apparently coeval sites described Winkelstern et al. (2017), https://doi.org/10.1002/2016pa003014 through reprocessing raw isotopic data with updated Brand/IUPAC parameters. New subannual-resolution reveal large variations out phase seasonal changes (i.e., lower values winter). Supported by identifying similar processes occurring today, past coastal driven seasonally variable freshwater discharge from a subterranean aquifer beneath island. Taken together, our results emphasize importance controlling carbonate δ18O, typical assumptions constant should be made cautiously nearshore settings can contribute to less accurate paleotemperature.

Eocene greenhouse climate revealed by coupled clumped isotope-Mg/Ca thermometry.

Past greenhouse periods with elevated atmospheric CO2 were characterized by globally warmer sea-surface temperatures (SST). However, the extent to which the high latitudes warmed to a greater degree than the tropics (polar amplification) remains poorly constrained, in particular because there are only a few temperature reconstructions from the tropics. Consequently, the relationship between inc...

Rapid switches in subpolar North Atlantic hydrography and climate during the Last Interglacial (MIS 5e)

[1] At the peak of the previous interglacial period, North Atlantic and subpolar climate shared many features in common with projections of our future climate, including warmer-than-present conditions and a diminished Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS). Here we portray changes in North Atlantic hydrography linked with Greenland climate during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e using (sub)centennially sampled...

The impact of precession changes on the Arctic climate during the last interglacial–glacial transition

Three sensitivity experiments using an Ocean Atmosphere General Circulation Model (OAGCM) are conducted to simulate the climate impact of precession. The relative contributions of components of the hydrological cycle including the albedo of Arctic sea ice, advection of atmospheric water vapor and sea surface temperature to the summer Arctic melt process are evaluated. Timing of the perihelion i...

Impact of meltwater on high-latitude early Last Interglacial climate

Recent data compilations of the early Last Interglacial period have indicated a bipolar temperature response at 130 ka, with colder-than-present temperatures in the North Atlantic and warmer-than-present temperatures in the Southern Ocean and over Antarctica. However, climate model simulations of this period have been unable to reproduce this response, when only orbital and greenhouse gas forci...
